Unmanned ghost ships?

The World’s First Ever Unmanned ‘Ghost’ Ships to Set Sail in 2020?

Ever wondered if your cargo could potentially be transported by a spectacular robotic machine? The world’s first unmanned ghost ships could take to the seas by the end of decade, but they also pose unique problems that need to be resolved beforehand.

If experiments are successful then the first vessel, currently being built, will become the world’s first fully autonomous cargo ship when it launches in 2020. However current international shipping law states that ocean-going vessels must be properly crewed and unmanned ships aren’t allowed in international waters.

Although change could be in the horizon as earlier this year the UN’s International Maritime Organization (IMO) began discussions that could allow unmanned ships to operate across oceans. This brings hope that the prospect of crewless ‘ghost’ ships crisscrossing the ocean, with the potential for cheaper shipping with fewer accidents.

Potential economic benefits are being reviewed and profit margins have been found to likely increase and fuel efficiency could be improved. Overall this would give the Cargo Shipping Industry far more stability.
